The Problem
A commercial property owner in Wabash contacted Restoration Concrete after noticing standing water collecting along the front sidewalk near the main office entrance. Over time, the settled concrete prevented water from draining properly, leaving puddles that created a slipping hazard and increased the risk of trips for employees and visitors.
The owner also wanted the main entrance walkway and the south sidewalk raised to improve safety and create a smoother path from the parking lot to the building.
What We Found
After inspecting the property, our team identified several issues contributing to the problem:
- The front sidewalk had settled near the office entrance.
- Water was unable to drain away from the building.
- Uneven concrete had created a noticeable trip hazard.
- The south walkway had also settled and lost support beneath the slab.
Fortunately, the concrete remained structurally sound, making traditional mudjacking the ideal repair solution.
How We Fixed It
Restoration Concrete used traditional mudjacking to raise and stabilize the affected sidewalks.
Step 1: Drill Small Access Holes
Small holes were drilled through the settled sidewalk panels to reach the empty spaces beneath the concrete.
Step 2: Pump Mudjacking Material Beneath the Slabs
A cement-based mudjacking material was pumped beneath the sidewalks to fill the voids and carefully raise the concrete.
The front entrance walkway was lifted to improve drainage from the parking lot to the front door, while the south walkway was raised and supported to eliminate uneven areas.
Step 3: Patch & Clean Up
After the sidewalks were properly aligned, the access holes were patched and the work area was cleaned.
The repair was completed with minimal disruption, allowing normal access to the building shortly afterward.
The Results
The office entrance and south walkway were successfully raised and stabilized without replacing the concrete.
The completed repair provided:
- Improved drainage near the main entrance
- Trip hazards greatly reduced
- A smoother walkway from the parking lot to the front door
- Better support beneath the concrete
- A faster and more cost-effective alternative to replacement
The property owner was pleased with the improved appearance, safer access, and restored functionality of the sidewalks.
Why Commercial Sidewalks Settle
Commercial sidewalks in Wabash are exposed to constant foot traffic, changing weather, and moisture that can gradually weaken the soil beneath the concrete. As support is lost, sidewalks settle, creating drainage problems and safety hazards.
Traditional mudjacking fills the voids beneath the slab, restores support, and raises the concrete back into position, helping extend the life of existing sidewalks without the expense of replacement.
