The Problem
A homeowner in Roanoke had a section of driveway near the house that had settled and was no longer properly pitched for drainage.
As the concrete sank, the low area created two problems. The uneven slab became a trip hazard, and water was no longer draining away from the house as effectively as it should.
There was also a large crack in the driveway that needed to be addressed as part of the repair.
The goal was to lift and support the settled concrete as much as possible, improve the pitch away from the house, eliminate the trip hazard, and repair the large crack.
What We Found
After evaluating the driveway, Restoration Concrete identified several areas that needed attention:
- A settled section of driveway near the house
- An uneven transition creating a trip hazard
- Poor pitch affecting water drainage
- A large crack in the concrete
- A need for additional support beneath the settled slab
The existing concrete was still a good candidate for repair, allowing the homeowner to address the settlement without tearing out and replacing the affected driveway section.
How We Fixed It
Restoration Concrete used traditional mudjacking to raise and support the settled driveway while improving the pitch away from the house.
Step 1: Prepare the Driveway
Small access holes were drilled through the affected concrete so the mudjacking material could reach the unsupported areas beneath the slab.
The crew also evaluated the existing elevations to determine how much the driveway could safely be raised.
Step 2: Raise & Support the Settled Concrete
A cement-based mudjacking material was pumped beneath the driveway.
As the material filled the empty spaces below, it restored support and gradually raised the settled section.
The slab was carefully adjusted to create the best possible positive pitch away from the house while improving the uneven transition that had created the trip hazard.
Step 3: Repair the Crack & Finish
After the lifting was complete, the access holes were patched and the large crack in the driveway was repaired.
The work area was then cleaned and the final elevations were checked.
The Results
The repair improved the driveway’s safety, support, and drainage without requiring concrete replacement.
The completed project helped:
- Raise the settled driveway section
- Restore support beneath the concrete
- Create a better pitch away from the house
- Improve water drainage
- Eliminate the uneven trip hazard
- Repair the large driveway crack
- Preserve the existing concrete
Instead of simply repairing the visible crack, the project addressed the settlement that was affecting how the driveway performed.
Why Positive Drainage Away From the House Matters
When a driveway settles toward a home, rainwater can begin flowing or collecting in areas where it shouldn’t.
Over time, water near the house can contribute to soil erosion and additional settlement beneath the concrete. It can also create low spots that remain wet after rainfall.
Correcting the elevation of a repairable driveway can help direct water away from the home while creating a smoother and safer surface.
Why Driveways Settle in Roanoke
Driveways in Roanoke can settle when the soil beneath the concrete compacts, shifts, or washes away.
Water intrusion, changing soil conditions, and Indiana’s freeze-thaw cycles can gradually weaken the support underneath a slab. Once voids develop, sections of the driveway may begin to sink and create uneven areas.
Traditional mudjacking fills unsupported spaces beneath the concrete and raises the slab toward a better position. When the existing concrete remains repairable, it can be a practical alternative to tearing out and replacing the driveway.
