The Problem
A homeowner in Churubusco had a driveway that was no longer sitting evenly.
Sections of the concrete had settled, leaving changes in height across the driveway and creating an uneven surface for everyday walking, parking, and driving.
Because the existing concrete was still a good candidate for repair, tearing out and replacing the driveway wasn’t necessary. The goal was to raise the settled sections, improve the alignment of the concrete, and restore support underneath the driveway.
What We Found
After evaluating the driveway, Restoration Concrete determined that the settled concrete could be repaired using traditional mudjacking.
The project focused on:
- Settled driveway sections
- Uneven concrete surfaces
- Changes in height between slabs
- Areas needing additional support beneath the concrete
- Improving the overall alignment of the driveway
Rather than removing otherwise usable concrete, the repair could address the settlement while keeping the existing driveway in place.
How We Fixed It
Restoration Concrete used traditional mudjacking to raise, level, and support the affected driveway sections.
Step 1: Drill Access Holes
Small access holes were drilled through carefully selected areas of the settled driveway.
These holes allowed the mudjacking material to reach the spaces beneath the concrete where additional support was needed.
Step 2: Raise & Level the Concrete
A cement-based mudjacking material was pumped beneath the affected driveway sections.
As the material filled unsupported areas below the slabs, it restored support and gradually raised the settled concrete.
The lifting process was carefully controlled to improve the alignment between driveway sections and create a smoother, more even surface.
Step 3: Patch & Clean
Once the driveway reached the best possible position, the access holes were patched and the work area was cleaned.
The existing driveway remained in place throughout the entire repair process.
The Results
The settled driveway sections were successfully raised and brought back into better alignment.
The completed repair provided:
- Settled concrete raised
- Improved alignment between driveway sections
- Smoother transitions between slabs
- Support restored beneath affected areas
- A more even surface for walking and driving
- Existing concrete preserved
- No unnecessary driveway replacement
By addressing the areas beneath the slabs that needed additional support, Restoration Concrete was able to improve both the function and appearance of the driveway.
Why Driveways Become Uneven
A driveway may look like the problem is at the surface, but settlement often begins underneath the concrete.
Every driveway slab depends on the soil and base below it for support. If that material compacts, shifts, or washes away, the concrete can begin to sink into the unsupported area.
Common factors that can contribute to driveway settlement include:
- Natural soil settlement
- Poorly compacted fill
- Water moving beneath the concrete
- Soil erosion
- Voids beneath the slabs
- Seasonal soil movement
- Freeze-thaw cycles
Once one section settles more than another, noticeable height differences can develop across the driveway.
Why Mudjacking Made Sense for This Driveway
A sinking driveway doesn’t automatically need to be replaced.
When the existing concrete remains in repairable condition, traditional mudjacking can restore support beneath the slab while raising the concrete toward a better position.
For this Churubusco driveway, mudjacking allowed Restoration Concrete to improve the uneven areas while preserving the concrete already in place.
It provided a practical alternative to the demolition, hauling, and new concrete required with complete driveway replacement.
