The Problem
A homeowner in Bluffton contacted Restoration Concrete after noticing the front walkway had settled where it met the front stoop. Over time, the concrete had dropped enough to create a noticeable step between the walkway and the entrance.
The uneven surface had become a trip hazard for family members and visitors, especially when carrying groceries or packages. The homeowner wanted the walkway safely leveled without replacing the existing concrete.
What We Found
During our inspection, we found several factors contributing to the settlement:
- The walkway had settled near the front stoop.
- Soil beneath the slab had compacted over time.
- Small voids had developed beneath the concrete.
- The walkway itself remained structurally sound.
Since the concrete was still in good condition, traditional mudjacking was the ideal repair solution.
How We Fixed It
Restoration Concrete used traditional mudjacking to raise the front walkway and restore a smooth transition to the stoop.
Step 1: Drill Small Access Holes
Small holes were carefully drilled through the settled walkway panels to reach the empty spaces beneath the slab.
Step 2: Pump Mudjacking Material Beneath the Walkway
A cement-based mudjacking material was pumped beneath the concrete to fill the voids and gradually lift the walkway back to the proper height.
The lifting process was carefully controlled to create an even transition where the walkway met the front stoop.
Step 3: Patch & Clean Up
Once the walkway was properly aligned, the drill holes were patched and the work area was cleaned.
The repair was completed quickly with minimal disruption to the homeowner.
The Results
The front walkway was successfully raised and stabilized without replacing the concrete.
The finished repair provided:
- A safer entrance with the trip hazard removed
- A smooth transition to the front stoop
- Restored support beneath the walkway
- Improved curb appeal
- A cost-effective alternative to replacement
The homeowner was happy to have a safer, level entrance while preserving the existing concrete.
Why Walkways Settle Near Front Steps
Walkways in Bluffton often settle near front stoops because the soil beneath the slab naturally compacts or washes away over time. As support is lost, the concrete begins to sink and creates uneven walking surfaces.
Traditional mudjacking fills the empty spaces beneath the slab, restores support, and raises the walkway back into position, extending the life of the existing concrete without the expense of replacement.
