The Problem
A property owner in Columbia City contacted Restoration Concrete after several sidewalk panels near the front walkway became uneven.
The height difference between slabs had gradually worsened over time, creating a dangerous trip hazard for visitors and family members.
The homeowner was especially concerned about safety during winter weather when snow and ice could make the uneven concrete harder to see.
What We Found
After evaluating the sidewalk, we found:
- Multiple slabs had settled unevenly
- Water intrusion had weakened the soil below
- Voids were developing underneath the concrete
- The slab edges had become misaligned
Because the concrete was still structurally intact, lifting the existing slabs was the most cost-effective option.
How We Fixed It
We repaired the sidewalk using traditional mudjacking concrete lifting.
Step 1: Access the Voids Below
Small holes were drilled into the affected sidewalk panels.
Step 2: Pump Mudjacking Material Beneath the Slabs
A cement-based mudjacking material was pumped beneath the sidewalk panels to fill empty spaces and carefully raise the uneven sections.
This process allowed us to lift the sidewalk while restoring support below the concrete.
Step 3: Patch & Finish
After the sidewalk was raised, the holes were patched and the area was cleaned.
The repair was completed far faster than a full replacement project.
The Results
The uneven sidewalk panels were successfully leveled and stabilized.
The finished repair helped:
- Remove dangerous trip hazards
- Improve safety for pedestrians
- Restore a smoother walking surface
- Improve the overall appearance of the property
- Prevent further slab movement from worsening
The homeowner was happy they could fix the issue without replacing the entire sidewalk.
Why Sidewalks Settle Over Time
Sidewalks in Columbia City are constantly exposed to moisture, freeze-thaw cycles, and soil movement.
As the soil underneath shifts or washes out, concrete panels lose support and begin settling unevenly.
Traditional mudjacking helps restore support beneath the slab while extending the life of the existing concrete.
