The Problem
A homeowner in Grabill contacted Restoration Concrete after noticing several sections of their front walkway had settled over the years. The uneven concrete had created a noticeable trip hazard leading to the front steps, and the steps themselves had begun to lose support as the soil underneath shifted.
The homeowner wanted to improve safety before the problem became worse or required a much more expensive repair.
What We Found
After inspecting the property, our team discovered:
- Multiple walkway panels had settled unevenly.
- The front steps showed signs of movement due to soil settlement.
- Voids had formed beneath portions of the walkway and steps.
- The concrete remained structurally sound and could be repaired.
Because the slabs were still in good condition, traditional mudjacking was the best solution.
How We Fixed It
Restoration Concrete used traditional mudjacking to lift the walkway and stabilize the front steps.
Step 1: Drill Small Access Holes
Small holes were drilled through the affected walkway panels and around the front steps to reach the empty spaces beneath the concrete.
Step 2: Pump Mudjacking Material Beneath the Concrete
A cement-based mudjacking material was pumped beneath the walkway and front steps to fill the voids and carefully raise the settled concrete.
As the material filled the empty spaces, it restored support beneath the slabs while eliminating the dangerous height differences.
Step 3: Patch & Clean Up
Once the walkway and front steps were properly aligned, the drill holes were patched and the work area was thoroughly cleaned.
The repair was completed quickly, allowing the homeowner to safely use the entrance again.
The Results
The walkway and front steps were successfully lifted and stabilized without replacing the concrete.
The completed repair provided:
- Trip hazards safely eliminated
- Front steps restored to a stable position
- Improved safety for family members and visitors
- Better support beneath the concrete
- A faster and more affordable solution than replacement
The homeowner was pleased with the smooth, even entrance and the minimal disruption during the repair.
Why Walkways and Front Steps Settle
Walkways and front steps in Grabill often settle as soil beneath the concrete naturally compacts or washes away over time. Once support is lost, the slabs begin to shift and create uneven surfaces that can become safety hazards.
Traditional mudjacking fills the voids beneath the concrete, restores support, and raises the slabs back into place, extending the life of the existing walkway and steps without the cost of replacement.
